Alison Soup House, Taman Tun Dr Ismail

Date: September 15, 2017

Remember your mother’s soup? Slow cooked to perfection, and done with nothing but LOVE. The love is then 10X intensified as you’re about to sit for your SPM! Don’t you miss this as you now try to grapple your way around the concrete jungle, and realise that there is no perfect substitute for that home-made soup. Everything out there is laced with MSG and little ‘shortcuts’ to make it tastier. Sometimes, it gets thiiiis close to tasting like the real thing, but you know it ain’t the real thing.

Despair no more: Introducing Alison Soup House. Alicia and Derson kick-started this quaint little soup house because they, too, know what it’s like to crave for that yummy healthy soup after a long day of strenuous work in the dog-eat-dog world. Without fail, the menu every day is heavily loaded with spices, chili pastes, creamy and deep-fried stuff drizzled with stocky gravies.

If you’re one who wants a change out of the usual grimy sinful food and would love to go for something that would be good for your body & soul, Alison’s Soup House is just what you need. Located in the heart of the busier side of TTDI, the restaurant on the 1st floor is not hard to notice with its pure white exterior seen from the outside.

Upon entering the soup house, one is welcomed with a peaceful and bright interior – creating a Marie Kondo minimalist vibe, accompanied with a touch of earth with herbaceous plants and wooden cabinets – something you’d probably find in the pages of a Kinfolk magazine. The premise is separated into an indoor and outdoor area, where the enclosed outdoor area is for diners who bring their pet dogs along (yes, this place is pet-friendly and there are menus for your little pups too).

Fun fact: The name Alison comes from the combination of both owners’ names (Alicia & Derson).

Alison Soup House boasts a range of comfort food packed with nutrients, making it the perfect guilt-free meal. What makes their menu perfect is that everything was made from scratch and no MSG is being used at all. The master stock is made using pork knuckles and 20 different ingredients; boiled over 15 (FIFTEEEN!!!) hours. The taste of the soup is definitely thicker in that sense; expect none of those watery tasteless soup that you usually find elsewhere.

The “7 Treasure Herbal Soup” boasts as the frontline of the establishment. As the name suggests, one will reap the benefits of the combination from 7 different types of herbs – a recipe that was inspired by Alicia’s mother herself! Help yourself to the generous serving of ingredients, such as goji berries, dates and top it off with succulent pork. Complement the soup with some brown vermicelli rice and your stomach will thank you for such treat.

The Honey Dates ABC soup is a familiar favourite among children due to the diverse and colourful organic vegetables all in one bowl, topped with tender pork meat. Yet again, everything in the soup is fresh and nutritious so pamper your child with a good dose of vitamins in this hearty meal.

Not the soupy type? Well, If you do visit during the weekend, you give their pork satay a try. Beautiful, shiny, caramelised pork belly grilled and served on skewer sticks (it is a satay, after all!). The cute part about the satay is every piece of its meat is ‘constructed’ by swirling long, thin pieces of pork belly so it doesn’t look exactly like the generic satay.

You can also enjoy more of Alison Soup House’s expertise in handling a variety of pork-based dishes by trying out the delicious sweet char siew or siew yok – another weekend-only opportunity.

Seeing is believing but don’t just sit there, looking at the pictures; don’t take my word (and pictures) for it, it is better to experience it first-hand. Nourish yourselves with a taste that reminds you of home.
